AUSTIN JEWISH ACADEMY (AJA) LAUNCHES TRANSITIONAL KINDERGARTEN PROGRAM

Austin Jewish Academy Head of School, Bernice Tabak, has announced that “in response to community needs, Austin Jewish Academy has created a transitional kindergarten program known as Gesher (“bridge”) to begin in the August 2008 school year.” “Gesher,” explains Tabak “is designed for students who are in a transitional year between pre-school and kindergarten. Most commonly, students will be from 4.10 months through 5.3 years of age as of September 1 of the enrolling year, although developmental readiness is a far more critical factor than chronological age.”

This newly developed program is designed to align expectations with the skills and readiness levels of the students, with the goal being to parallel the regular kindergarten program as closely as possible. The transitional kindergarten will give the “young” kindergartener the opportunity to blossom at his/her own rate in a relaxed environment.

Kindergarten teachers, Aileen Duncan and Kathy Rosenmann welcome the addition of this transitional kindergarten option to AJA. Both have witnessed the demands of the traditional kindergarten classroom increase over the years and feel that “this Gesher program will give younger students academic and social stimulation without undue expectations and pressure.”

In the spring of the transitional kindergarten year, a conference will be held with the parents, teacher and administration to determine next year’s placement. Although most students will move on to kindergarten, some will show readiness for first grade enrollment. Decisions such as these will be based on skill development and overall growth during the transitional kindergarten year. Austin Jewish Academy is very pleased to offer this new and exciting opportunity to our community. Applications for the Gesher program are now being accepted. Call 512-735-8350 or email Sharon.swedlow@austinjewishacademy.org  for information or an application.

Box Tops for Education is Back

Here’s a Summer Homework assignment from Sandy Goldberbg. . .  Continue to collect all and any box tops for education over the summer, and bring them to school when school reopens.

AJA is currently enrolled in the Box Tops for Education program. What this means is that certain “Box Tops” logos are worth 10 cents each for our school.  In the past, through this program our school has received well over $100 monthly. With your help we believe we can increase that amount in the coming months.

Box Tops can be found on many products you buy for yourself and your family. Brands such as General Mills, Pillsbury, Betty Crocker, Kleenex and Hefty Bags are examples. Our school can use the money received from this program any way it wishes. So please moms, dads, aunts, uncles, grandparents, friends and others, start saving the Box Tops now.

When you cut off the box tops please do not cut off the expiration date on the coupon.

To turn Box Tops in, simply drop them off in the school office, or send them in with your child when you’ve accumulated 5 or more. Some people use a small envelope, and others use a small plastic bag to put them in; from there they go to our volunteer coordinator Sandy Goldberg, Maya, Gabriela and Yael Macon’s grandmother, and she does the rest. Thank you, Sandy.

If you want more information about this program, you can go to http://www.boxtops4education.com to get a complete list of participating brands and learn more about how you can help AJA. Thank you for your time, support and box tops.

VOLUNTEER VIBE

Thank you to all who signed on to be mentors to our 8th graders and guide them through their Senior Projects: Sarah Gerichten, Neena Husid, Jeff Lazar, Nataly Miller, Eric Pomerantz, Marley Porter, Laura Rothschild and Gary Walker.

A huge thank you to all of our incredibly devoted volunteers who have made the 2007-2008 school year another successful and wonderful one.
