1st Grade, The Art Cafe, Ms Slom

We started the new year with experimenting with chalk pastels on wet black paper, the results were quite surprising. The chalk on wet paper is dull and creamy but once dry the chalk pastels were bright and flakey. We then moved on to experimenting with chalk pastels on white paper, we learnt how to blend, smudge and use the chalks to create illusion of depth. We then looked closely and discussed Vincent Van Gogh’s Sunflowers painted in 1888. The students then drew a vase of beautiful sunflowers and are coloring them in chalk pastels.

The 1st grade students are very busy creating an unique, one-of-a-kind art project that will be available for purchase at our silent auction at the annual School Gala on February 20th, 2016.
