In 3rd grade social studies/Art Pizza box Island unit the students painted the inside of their boxes after looking at and learning about images of water by David Hockney. Their islands are unique Island shapes based on their own feet shapes, created by tracing around their feet. The students then took Air dry clay and covered their traced feet to create Islands with at least 5 land forms on it. Once dry the students painted their island with acrylic paints. The island was glued into the painted pizza box and once the students had completed their mandala name Compass roses were added to the top cover of the box. The students enjoyed working in the creative process and different materials – paint, air dry clay and ink.
