The third grade community visitor this week was our own, Ruth Katry, Idan’s mother. Mrs. Katry is an architect. This was a wonderful real world connection to our geometry unit. She shared some wonderful photos of amazing architecture. We also learned about some famous architects like Frank Lloyd Wright who designed the famous home Falling Waters in Pennsylvania and Frank Gehry who designed the Guggenheim in Balboa Spain. The students really enjoyed seeing how sketches become shapes which then become buildings. This was a very nice tie in to our last speaker Steve McDaniels who also described his innovations as art! The students were very interested in what Mrs. Katry creates and how she continues to work in Israel, even while living here in Austin. We learned that all of her work is done with a computer.
