We started out by introducing ourselves in the “All about Me†unit through Self Portraits. We read and looked at the illustrations in the books:  I like myself by Karen Beaumont and Look at me by Ruth Thomson. We drew with sharpie, colored with crayons and painted over our drawings with liquid water colors. All our artists enjoyed using different art materials.
Our Art curriculum is based on the Elements and Principles of Art and Design.
Kinder’s first element of art and Design this year is line. We started exploring the different kind of lines that we know in art-straight, curvy, zigzag, wiggly worm, spiral line. We drew (in pencil) different lines under each other and then we painted in tempera in different colors over our pencil drawings. Once this is dry, we will paint over our lines and add giant wobbly eyes to create line monsters.
In 1st Grade, the first element of art and Design this year is Emphasis and Color. We talked about warm colors-red, yellow, orange and cool colors- Blue, green, purple. We are drawing a fruit that will be painted in water colors in either warm or cool colors and the background in the opposite cool or warm colors.
In 2nd Grade, the first element of art and Design  this year is Pattern. We started by looking at landscape paintings by Karla Gerard. We then had a conversation about-what is a pattern-from there we started to draw different patterns-we will be drawing and painting a landscape in the patterned style of Karla Gerard using the wax resist technique.
In 3rd grade we do many integrated art projects with the social studies and science units with the common core standards. We are starting with Map bowls. The students will be learning to use the decopache technique while using maps to cover the surface of a bowl.
In 4nd grade the first Element of Art that we are learning is “Colorâ€Â. Color is the part of light that is reflected by the object we see. In two dimension we mix pigments to create new colors. Color is defined by hue and value.
We will first read the book Uncle Andy’s by James Warhola. then we will see a power-point presentation on Pop Art and Andy Warhol’s (1928-1987) famous prints. We will define what popular culture was in his day and what it is now. Students will then brainstorm a pop culture object that would best represent themselves and draw it on a sheet of small paper 4 1/2″ x 6″. Then they will place it on a Styrofoam printing plate under their pencil drawing and traced over it again so it would carve into the foam. Once their drawing was transferred and carved deep enough, they will began to learn the mono printing technique. The students will then pick 4 colored papers, and will print their mono-prints four times with black ink and brayers.
5th Grade’s first art project is based on  element of art and Design is Movement. We will be looking at Keith Haring and create new and improved stick man figures in dancing positions.
