In our current art project, the second graders are each creating an Egyptian Magnificent Sarcophagus.  We looked at art of the ancient Egyptian sarcophagi for inspiration. The students will learn about symmetry and draw the shape of an Egyptian mummy from a stencil. They will draw this on dark colored paper and will fill in the shape with details inspired by Ancient Egyptian sarcophagus. They will use oil pastels to draw patterns and color the mummy cover. Once they have completed this, each child will write their name using Egyptian Hieroglyphics.
In Health, the children discussed why healthy teeth are important to us and in Art we read the book ‘George Washington’s Teeth’ written by Deborah Chandra and Madeleine Comora and illustrated by  Brock Cole (Illustrator).
We are hoping to participate in the “My Bright Smile†global art contest offered by Colgate/Palmolive and talk about the theme, ‘Why my bright smile is important’. We will them draw up ideas, sloppy copies and the final drawings. The students can decide which art materials they would like to use – oil pastels, water colors or wax resist. Once the art work is complete I will need parental authorization in order to submit your child’s artwork. I will include these forms in your students weekly folders please fill these in and return them to Mrs. Schwartz or me by May 11th.
