Welcome to first grade! We are really getting in the swing of things ~ getting to know each other, practicing our 7 habits, doing our best, and learning each day. In Math, we’ve practiced skip counting (by 2s, 5s, and 10s), writing our numbers 1-30, and have begun to study place value with tens and ones. In Science, we’re learning about science (what is it?) and scientific tools and their uses and will soon be discussing our science safety rules and signing a contract agreeing to follow them. In Social Studies, we’re learning the qualities of good citizens and finding everyday scenarios to practice our good habits (being proactive, putting first things first, thinking win-win, and more). And, finally, in ELAR (English Language Arts and Reading), we’re practicing taking spelling tests in preparation for our first real spelling test on Friday. We’re reading each day, learning about characters and main idea, and in phonics we’re increasing our speed and fluency with our letter/sound relationships.
I hope you’ll all be able to make it for Back to School Night on Thursday, September 11th. We’ll be outlining important classroom procedures, tips to help your first grader succeed, and you’ll get a glimpse inside your child’s school day.
Thank you for all of your support as we make it through the lift-off phase and begin to spread our wings for an exciting year!
