Geometry and more

This year we have a mixed class. The first half of the class are three eight graders: Avi, Emily and Benji. They are taking an online Geometry course. They are all doing great and are almost done with the first part of the course. Occasionally we take breaks from the computer and do some “old-fashioned” teacher-students lesson.

We have played with Compass-and-straightedge construction just like Euclid did more than 200 years ago. Euclid, often referred to as the “Father of Geometry”, wrote the Elements, which is one of the most influential works. In the Elements, Euclid deduced the principles of what is now called Euclidian geometry from a small set of axioms.

The other three students in the room are Eli, Carly and Eddie. Three charming fifth graders who will be studying the six grade math curriculum and many more advanced mathematical topics. They have recently completed Unit One: Whole Numbers and Patterns. This unit covered the Order of Operations, estimating whole numbers, exponents, and patterns and sequences. We also did the first chapter of Algebra 1, the students loved it and were all up for the challenge. We are now half way through Chapter Two: Introduction to Algebra!
