Lots of learning fun in 1B!

We’ve been a busy bunch of first graders!  For Social Studies, we spent the past month learning about India – its people, culture, customs, food, environments, symbols, and animals. We practiced some fun kids’ yoga in our class and even tried meditation. Our last week of studies included two special guests.  Preya Patel is a classically trained Indian dancer and she showed us the first dance students learn as children and then taught us how to represent a bee, a peacock, a dragon, and a forest with hand and body motions in dance.

Dr. Shalini Tewari visited us a few days later to tell us about India first hand and brought traditional Indian clothing for us to see and even had bindis for us! We learned so much and had a great time, too.  Now we’re headed to Russia!

In Science, we wrapped up our exploration of force and motion with a tug-of-war with the other first grade class. Because the other class had one more student pulling on their side, they won, but each team soon got help from 2nd and 3rd graders and our side won that round! Plants are next up for us in Science and we have lots of fun projects in store for celebrating Earth Day.

In Math, we learned the difference between 2D and 3D shapes and built some 3D shapes of our own. We’re also getting much better at counting coins to ‘buy’ things and are starting to learn about giving change.

We’ve reached an exciting point in English & Language Arts now that we’re learning to use long vowels and our reading fluency is taking off! We retell stories we read to one another each week and have been practicing telling the difference between fiction and non-fiction and fact and opinion. Our 5th grade buddies even got in on the fun helping out with reading groups.

Until next time, Namaste from 1B!
