Springtime is a great time in First Grade!

We’re right in the middle of April and enjoying the beautiful weather and the opportunity to take our learning outdoors!  This week we’ve been busy at work on our Earth Day PSAs.  Students worked in groups, picked a message, wrote a script, rehearsed many times, and today we filmed with the help of our 5th grade buddies.  We’ll post them here when they’re ready!

In Social Studies, we wrapped up our last class-wide country and culture study with Russia.  We combined our research about Russia into a book that students wrote and illustrated themselves.  Maya’s mom lived in Russia as a child and came to talk with our class about what it was like during the Soviet years and shared Russian tea and treats with our class before a lively Q&A.  Our books will get to go home after portfolio day.  Next up, students picked their own countries to research and teach their classmates about – it should be exciting!

In math, we’ve been learning about symmetry and fractional parts of shapes.  We’ve also been studying compound words, building some of our own, and learning where to divide words with multiple syllables, including our names!

Until next time, dah-svee-dah-nee-yah from 1B!
